A year after discovering that her husband no longer loves her, Dr Annie Templeton wakes up with a sudden relish for singledom. However, she soon realises that being single in your fifties is very different from being single in your twenties.
How, she wonders, do people of my age – with careers, adult children doing unwise things with unwise people, parents going gaga, and friends falling ill, or in or out of love – ever have the time and energy to find a new partner?
Who’d Have Thought It? is a romantic comedy, which will make you laugh and cry – often at the same time.

"Who'd Have Thought It?" is a rarity for me. That is, a contemporary novel that I truly enjoyed reading. (Normally, I avoid contemporary novels like the plague. But the premise of this novel --- as explained by the author on a radio talk show I heard recently --- piqued my curiosity so much so that I felt compelled to buy the book.)

The novel begins in Venice where a British couple (Annie and Edward Templeton, both of them doctors in their 50s with 2 adult daughters) have come to celebrate their wedding anniversary. Until that moment, Annie did not know that her husband had fallen out of love with her and taken up with Susie, a slightly younger Blonde he has loved for some time. Annie was trying to coax Edward to go out to dinner, dressed in one of her sexy outfits. But Edward had no interest in that at all, saying little. One gets the impression that Edward keeps his emotions tightly controlled. But then he feels that this charade cannot go on. He tells Annie everything. She is DEVASTATED.

The novel then takes the reader ahead by a year. Annie is living on her own in Cambridge (where she has a medical practice with a few other doctors), picking up the pieces of her life.

There are elements in this novel that are deliciously funny. I enjoyed being part of the journey in which Annie goes about re-inventing herself. After a year without Edward, she has opened herself to try and find love again. She learns that dating in your 50s is very different from dating in your 20s.

I also enjoyed the interconnecting "side stories" the author provided on Annie's daughters (Alice, who is sensitive, hard-working, and a bit of a straight arrow --- and Lucy, the younger daughter who is bubbly, adventurous, and a thoroughgoing extrovert), Annie's colleagues Gareth and Jonathan, and a number of her longstanding friends. Simply put, this novel is A WINNER.

Who'd Have Thought It? eBook Christine Webber Reviews

Unceremoniously dumped by her consultant husband after thirtysomething years of middling marriage in favour of a younger model, Dr Annie Templeton buries herself in her work as a GP and tries to muddle on.

One year later she wakes up and becomes aware of a strange shift in perception. Suddenly she's not feeling so sorry for herself any more. It slowly dawns on her that perhaps life could begin at 55 for her too. Complications abound but the more Dr Annie opens up to the world, the more she finds that it opens up to her.

A great cheer up book for any break up and a salutary lesson that life can work out, even if it's not the way we were once promised in fairy tales.
This thoroughly enjoyable contemporary novel tells the tale of Dr. Annie Templeton, a general-practice physician with two adult daughters, who is forced to re-evaulate her life after the unexpected departure of her husband, Edward, for another woman. Dating in her fifties, Annie soon discovers, is vastly different from dating in her twenties, but luckily for Annie -- and for the well-entertained reader -- the good doctor is definitely up for the challenge. A fun and fast-paced read, with nuanced and well-developed characters. Highly recommended.
A trip to Venice to celebrate the 30th anniversary of your first meeting is not the ideal time to be told by your husband he's found someone else, (though that is not to suggest there is an ideal time), yet this is what happened to Anne. This is opening sequence of the book and sets in motion Anne's shock re-emergence into singledom. Worse still it appears she is now an acronym - a SWOFTY - a Single Woman Over FifTY. Being single was bad enough as a teenager, when you thought you knew the rules, but now it appears the rules have changed and Anne is thrown in at the deep end.

I thoroughly enjoyed Anne's journey as she tried to find her way back into dating as well, as well as coping as a partner in a GP's practice; juggling friend's illnesses; crises and family traumas. It was a refreshing change to read a rom-com aimed at a more mature market and it worked well.

I loved the character of Anne, she's very warm, caring and yet also adventurous (once she's warmed to the idea). Like most of us, whatever age, new challenges also bring with them inbuilt insecurities and fears, yet being older I'd like to think we're more able to acknowledge them as Anne does. However age also brings with it roles and responsibilities that are not so easily shaken off, unlike an unwanted wife. Anne is a mother to adult girls, who still expect her to dance to their tune when they need her. She also has a father with dementia (and a secret lover it transpires) and a best friend who has her own troubles.

Whether Anne find's her Mr Right, you'll need to find out for yourself, but I'm sure you'll enjoy following her search. It's a realistic journey with lows and highs, and lots of warmth humour ( and yes, sex) along the way.
